T/LT 23 Studios

The home has been named ‘Tuah Residence’ (sounds like ‘duah’) as a compliment to the Cherokee name ‘Wohali,” given that this home has been designed for lot 63 at Wohali Estates. While the Cherokee tribes did not live in this area, several native American tribes did occupy these lands including the Ute, Paiute, Goshute, Navajo and Shoshone. According to data from the University of Utah’s Shoshoni language project, the Shoshoni word ‘Tuah’ means become, turn into, change into, develop, create. We hope that naming the project Tuah honors the native Shoshone tribe through the nature of the home site’s transformation which playfully highlights the natural grades, maximizing it’s site placement integral with the natural landscape. We also love the playfulness of a doube entendre of the words meaning here as Tuah, when rearranged, can ‘turn into’ the word ‘Utah’ – a bit of a wink to the multilayered spirit of our home design.

With this carefully laid out placement of the home within the natural slope, the two major forms are uniquely expressed yet overlap each other and give spirit to these volumes. Focused views showcase both the golf course and opposing lower ridge to the west, as well as the magnificent and dominant mountain peak to the south. The home is tucked into the mountain on the east side of the home providing intimate views from the private primary bathroom and outdoor shower and spa, providing users the feeling of being integrated with the surrounding landscape. With the addition of the sliding glass doors and ceiling heaters, our design ensures that temperature control allows for use of the space year-round. Imagine sitting in this space, in the spa in the middle of the snow-covered mountains, enjoying the wintry drama while being warm and cozy.

Further taking advantage of the site’s natural slope, Tuah Residence is positioned to include a beautiful water fall edge from the main level pool to the lower-level fire feature seating area, so lawn play will enjoy the ambient sounds of this extensive water feature. The outdoor accommodations continue to provide diverse experiences with a main level BBQ seating area just off the kitchen, also climate controlled for year-round use. Meanwhile the entertainment deck provides a more expansive view to the large southern mountain ranges and provides a more lively setting for day and evening entertaining.

This is the perfect home to cozy up in throughout the winter months and cool off in the summer with festive and lively outdoor entertainment spaces accommodating both the intimate experiences as well as large gathering of loved ones.

TUAH
RESIDENCE

This home has been designed in the spirit of one or two people living here full time and having all their daily needs satisfied on the main level. And yet the home also perfectly accommodates a large extended family and/or friends who may be visiting for holidays, vacations, or spontaneous visits. All needs, all arrangements, are covered by the second primary bedroom and bath on the upper level, as well as three additional bedrooms, a larger laundry services area, office, loft / library, fitness and entertainment space. This home hits all the marks when it comes to a home that both provides respite from the outside world while also providing a joyous backdrop for loved ones to gather.

PORTFOLIO

TILT 23 Studios’ design philosophy is derived from the post-World War II ‘modernist’ movement. Modernism promotes sleek, clean lines and rejects ornament for its own sake. We are grounded in this tradition of minimalism and material-driven functionality, as we believe that form follows function. We embrace asymmetrical compositions with the use of geometric forms, often through flat roofs and an emphasis on horizontal lines. We believe in bringing the outdoors in through designs that create voluminous open spaces, never to imply coldness or lack of character but conversely to promote a sense of calm, warmth and comfort. We pursue these aims through our belief in a material-centric approach, featuring natural materials such as concrete, steel, stone, glass, and wood. At TILT 23 Studios we believe in working intimately with each client, and being equally attentive to the environmental particulars of each and every site we design. This attentiveness to both our clients and the particulars of their sites is evident in our portfolio through the range and diversity of projects, but our core design beliefs remain consistent across all the work we do. Ultimately, our goal is to craft beautifully customized design that is both timeless and as uniquely specific to the site as to each and every one of our clients.
